Respirable Crystaline Silica Medicals

As of 2017, The Queensland Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) set out guidelines for the monitoring and surveillance of mine and quarry workers who are exposed to Silica Material. Silica or Silicon dioxide is a natural material formed in rock, sand and soil and can be found in concrete, rock, granite, masonry, and landscaping materials.

The purpose of this is to provide early diagnosis, intervention, and prevention of Silica-related illnesses and diseases for the worker.  Part of these guidelines is the recommendation of Respirable Crystaline Silica Medicals. This provides OHS safe entry and exit for the workers into these exposure sites, along with continual monitoring at least every 5 years.

At Medicals Australia we provide a comprehensive and focused medical assessment that meets the guidelines of the DNRME and is EMO and AMA certified.

The Coal Services Health Monitoring Requirements for Coal Mine Workers Order No. 45 (Order 45) plays a critical role in ensuring NSW coal mine workers are appropriately screened for health impacts associated with occupational exposures, including dust, noise, chemicals, and other workplace hazards.

Administered by Coal Services under the Coal Industry Act 2001 (NSW), the health assessments outlined in Order 45 not only assess occupational risks but can also identify other health and lifestyle-related conditions that may affect a worker’s ability to perform their role safely and effectively.

Regular health monitoring enables the early identification of both occupational and non-occupational conditions, often before symptoms develop. This early detection supports timely intervention, effective treatment, and preventative measures — helping to protect workers and maintain long-term workforce health.

The health surveillance scheme also supports NSW coal industry employers in meeting their work health and safety obligations, ensuring the ongoing health, safety, and wellbeing of their workforce.
