Spirometry

Spirometry in Occupational Medical Assessments

Our booking teams are frequently asked questions about Spirometry testing. So, we thought we would share some useful insights on this important assessment.

“I hate this test, why do I keep having to do it?”
Is a question often asked.

Spirometry

It is designed to be a difficult test because Doctors need to know the peak performance of your lungs in order to pick up any early signs of lung disease.

Spirometry tests your lung volume (there are disorders that restrict this) and your ability to blow air out of your lungs in the first second of the test – that’s why it is so important to TRY HARD! With many lung disorders, the important airway tubes that supply oxygen to your body when you breathe air in are narrowed. These can be picked up with spirometry.

“Why did I have to take Ventolin?”

Asthma is a very common lung disorder that we have all heard of. Asthmatic lungs respond incredibly well to Ventolin – the way the medication works opens the asthmatic airways up and we see a great improvement in the spirometry result. If doctors do not see an improvement, then it’s possible that we are seeing early signs of airway narrowing due to causes other than asthma, including mine dust lung disease.

Note! The most common diagnosis from abnormal spirometry is COPD from smoking…. So, think about those cigarettes.

“I’ve been referred for another test, which is just like spirometry – why?”

Complex Lung Function Tests

Usually shortened to CLFTs, they are very similar to spirometry, but this test can measure the transfer of gases within the lungs, helping to confirm the likelihood of asthma vs another type of lung disease.

So next time your candidate asks why another Spiro, you can share some valuable insight and explain the importance.

Our Spirometry Services

We organise spirometry testing as part of our occupational health and pre-employment medical assessments, ensuring that workers meet the respiratory health requirements for their role. Whether you require testing for new hires, routine health monitoring, or compliance with workplace safety regulations, our team facilitates accurate, reliable results across Australia.

Spirometry is often a mandatory component of occupational and pre-employment medical assessments, particularly in industries with exposure to dust or respiratory hazards. Many assessments—such as Mineral Mine and Quarry, Coal Board Medicals, and Order 43—require spirometry to be completed by an accredited physician at an accredited clinic.

Medicals Australia partners with clinics and physicians that hold the necessary accreditations nationwide. We ensure all assessments—including spirometry—are completed correctly, compliantly, and in line with regulatory requirements before they are returned to the recruiter.

Our team manages this entire process, removing the administrative burden from clients and allowing recruiters to focus on what they do best.

Why Recruiters Choose Us

With a network of 350+ accredited clinics, fast turnaround times, and a dedicated bookings team, we make spirometry and respiratory health assessments seamless. We understand the urgency of getting candidates cleared for site work—especially for mining, construction, and industrial roles where downtime costs money.

That’s why we coordinate every step, from appointment scheduling to report return, ensuring your workforce is fit, compliant, and ready to mobilise without delays.
